006. For God's sake, can't a woman wreak a little havoc without there being a man involved?

I totes mcgoats had this ready last night, but then I had to go live my life, so it did not get posted. So they'll be extra Darla today! I know everyone is just thrilled.

Drusilla: We could have a thousand soldiers, and still he'd come... Galloping, galloping, still he'll come.

Darla: Why is everybody trying to make this about Angel? I mean, for God's sake, can't a woman wreak a little havoc without there being a man involved?

Drusilla: You miss him, like a heartbeat.

Darla: I don't miss my heartbeat, Dru. It was a symptom of a disease I've since been cured of.

Darla: I was going to kill you tonight. Take you out of this world, the same way I brought you into it. But I didn't have to. You gave yourself over so completely, Angelus. I felt you surrender.

Angel: I gave you everything I had left.

Darla: But we...
Angel: Yeah.
Darla: And you...
Angel: I know.
Darla: Then I...
Angel: Three times.
Darla:
You're not evil? I don't understand. Was I...? Was it... not good? Well, I don't accept that. You cannot tell me that wasn't perfect. Not only have I been around for four hundred years, but I used to do this professionally and that was perfect! [beat] We'll go again.

In the episode after Darla is turned again, she doesn't have a whole lot to say for the majority of the episode. It really relied on Julie Benz to sell the whole thing - Darla's confusion, her anger at being turned. Darla is animalistic to a point. She remembers enough to be furious with Drusilla and spare Angel, but it's not clear how much of human!Darla remains. Once she kills again, however, the turnover is complete: she's back to old tricks.

Then she and Dru stop battling and hug and prance off all lesbigay to do what girly vampires do (ie kill people and try on hats for fun). I'm amused by Drusilla and Darla together because I don't particularly care for Drusilla (her acting and the schtick get old fast for me) and, if she hadn't made Darla, I can't imagine Darla would care for her either. Drusilla was Angel's business and I always thought Darla put up with her more than anything. I wish we'd see Darla and Spike interact, which I don't think they ever properly did. I can't imagine she liked him either, but there is a certain similarity to them at times.

Vampire Darla, now without a mirror, begins to make some really heinous fashion choices. There's a lot of pleather and sweaters - I don't know.

Darla's revamping is obviously hard on Angel. It reminded me a lot of s2 of Buffy, actually: the romance, the tender moment, the shock of transformation. Angel becomes Angelus, Darla becomes a vampire. Angel realizes, like Buffy did, that he's too close to it to kill Darla - but give him time. He even burns his pencil sketches of Darla and we all know how much he treasures those. She's not the woman he was starting to know anymore. Angelus wasn't Buffy's boyfriend. Cue training montage.

(A totes unnecessary training montage, because all Angel ultimately does is moodily fake!smoke and then casually flick his cig at a pool of gas, setting everyone aflame.)

I didn't rewatch for today, so I'm a little fuzzy on details, but I think Angel's whole thing was about losing heart in his mission? Which culminates in a really shady sexual encounter with Darla, finally. It's...weird. I know it's meant to illustrate that Angel is at the breaking point and he's clearly using Darla as a means to an end, but... It's uncomfortable. Darla is clearly freaked out at first (her eyes are even open when they kiss), though the show goes on to expound how much she enjoyed it. Vampires and their sexy times are like a whole other theme on this show, but looking at caps now versus when I originally watched it is making me eyebrow-raise. He wouldn't Darla-with-a-soul like this.

Angel has a weird fakeout drama queen fit that ends in...no actual soul-losing. They have some amusing dialogue where I'm supposed to be convinced Angel is just phenomenal in bed (I'm not) and Darla says she was going to kill him the night before - which, you know, did not look like it was happening at all. It looked like he was throwing her around and she didn't know how to react.

I haven't talked much about my dear little Lindsey but the fact that he cares for burned!Darla is heartbreaking to me. I think he really does love her, quite sweetly and simply for who they both are. He just wants her to look at him like she looks at Angel, but that'll never happen. He cowboys up and fights Angel for her, gives her whatever he can, and she bounces without a second thought (robbing him blind in the process). She doesn't have a soul. She can't love him back.

So! That's it for season two Darla.
