HA it is earlier than midnight! HA.
Darla's story is so fucking sad. She just BAMFs her way through it, of course, but it is so fucking sad. Angel says it, as to why he wants to save her - she never really had a chance. Just to recap:
She's born in the Virginia colonies and becomes a prostitute and is dying of syphilis when she's turned by the Master. Then we know nothing of her life until Angel comes into it. I assume she's fiercing it up all over the joint in that time. When he's cursed, they separate. He kills her in season one of Buffy and she's brought back in season one of Angel, only as a human.
It's all fun and sexy games for a while until the guilt of all her past misdeeds starts to undo her. Then she finds out that she's dying again, of the same disease she was dying of the first time she was a human - syphilis. She wants to become a vampire again, but Angel refuses so she searches random vampire clubs to no avail. Angel goes through this trial thing to give her a second chance (a new life), only to discover she's already living her second chance. He promises to be with her until the end but Wolfram & Hart once again gets in the way, bringing Drusilla back to sire Darla again.
Fun times, right?
Also, I'm so sorry I keep intensely transcribing stuff! These scenes are just so awesome that I have no ability to cut them down. Obviously skim all that shit and just look at the pictures if you want.
Lindsey: Darla?
Darla: Say that again.
Lindsey: I just, uh, I said your name... Darla.
Darla: It sounds so odd, doesn't it?
Lindsey: I don't know what you mean.
Darla: It wasn't my name when I was human. First time I was human, I mean.
Lindsey: What was your name?
Darla: I don't remember. I'm not her, whoever she was. I was Darla for so long. And then... I wasn't. I wasn't anything. I just...stopped. He killed me and I was done. But then you brought me back. What did you bring back, Lindsey? What am I? Did you bring back that girl whose name I can't remember? Or did you bring back something else? The other thing?
Lindsey: Both. Neither. You're just you... whatever that is.
Darla: Why haven't you kissed me? You've been dying for it, haven't you?
Lindsey: I didn't know if you wanted me to...
Darla: Why should that matter? Do you think I ever hesitated when I wanted something? Life's too short. Believe me. Four hundred years and still too short. (They kiss.) That's how humans get what they want, I remember that much. (She bites his neck.) That's how vampires get what they want. What am I?
Lindsey: Darla.
Darla: Is that it? Am I Darla?
Lindsey: Yes.
Darla: Careful, Darla would snap you in half. Is that who I am?
Lindsey: I understand what you're going through.
Darla: No. Nobody understands. I can feel this body dying, Lindsey. I can feel it decaying moment by moment. It's being eaten away by this thing inside of it. It's a cancer, this soul.
Angel: How could the powers allow you to be brought back and dangle a second chance and take it away like this?
Darla: Maybe this is my second chance.
Angel: To die?
Darla: Yes. To die the way I was supposed to die in the first place.
(They look at each other a moment; Angel rises and sits next to her, puts his arm around her.)
Angel: I'm not gonna leave you. Every moment you have left I'm gonna be by your side. You're never gonna be alone again.
I rewatched "The Trial" (2x09) before doing this post. It's such a good episode. The end (when Dru turns her) really fucks you up, every time.
I wish I was better at meta, but I feel like the dialogue and the acting says more than I could. I love when Darla is looking at herself in the mirror (way at the top of the picspam) and she puts on lipstick then takes it off. I love the garishness of her makeup, the way it makes her look more ill, more desperate. It's all too real. It's too harsh. Darla sees it too, when she looks in the mirror. Maybe it tortures her to have a reflection at all. Maybe she's just trying to remember how to use a mirror after four hundred years of questionable makeup-applying.
You could build an entire drinking game around the amount of times both Angel and Darla say they were together for a hundred and fifty years, btw. I GET IT, GUYS.
Also I miss this show! Angel! Cordy! Wes! Lindsay! Lilah! Arghhh it was so good!
Random of the day:
Does Quinn Fabray remind ANYONE ELSE of Darla?! This has been bothering me for two years, guys. The little whispery voice, the eyebrow thing. RIGHT. I know I mentioned that in my Quinn mix (I think) because I used "Ill Wind" in it, but it STILL bothers me.
And in case anyone is behind, here are the last three posts:
Old Timey Flashback Darla
Darla and Angel in "Dear Boy"
Fanmix: the preludes and the nocturnes
