Summary: Jess lasts two whole weeks in California before he realizes L.A. is bullshit

Note: For [info]sing_song_sung! Sorry this is so short, girl, my brain is beginning to get progressively more fried the closer we get to the holidays. Sooo enjoy anyway!

Jess lasts two whole weeks in California before he realizes L.A. is bullshit and he's an East Coast boy at heart.

He doesn't like the sunshine and he doesn't like the fucking beach and he certainly doesn't like his dad, or his dad's wife. It's a whole fucking list of things Jess hates, L.A., and he's glad to get the hell out of there.

Thing is, he can't go back to Connecticut. Not that he wants to – if he hates anywhere as much as California, it's Connecticut.

New York's always an option, he guesses, if he wants to sleep on his mother's couch and make himself suicidal.

He calls his Uncle Luke once, hangs up while it's still ringing. Calls Rory, waits for her upbeat hello? before hanging up again.

Jess reminds himself that he's never had anyone to rely on before, so nothing's changed.

He borrows some money from his dad, his wife frowning hard enough to crack the whole time, but whatever, Jess was the one who was run out on, he's owed a couple bucks. He rents a car with the money and plans only to drive.

Jess gets as far as Denver before he needs to stop for gas money, picking up some shifts at Walmart because he comes so highly recommended. He'd rather he was doing something more literary, but everybody's gotta eat, right?

On his breaks he slinks into a nearby diner for entirely unsentimental reasons.

The diner's where he starts the novel, actually, but he doesn't realize it then. He goes in, orders the same thing, jots down a few lines, then a few more. It doesn't begin to take shape, really, until he's left Denver behind.

The diner's where he calls Rory again, for the last time. She doesn't pick up at all; it just rings and keeps ringing.

Jess drives.
