In Paris Blair decides it's time for a change and cuts her hair, dark waves just brushing her chin, bangs falling into her eyes. It makes her look older, serious, pensive. She lines her eyes darkly. She says to Serena, "You're next."
Serena laughs and shakes her head, hair still full and long and wild. "No way," she says. Serena never really changes, just pretends to.
In Paris Serena asks, "Do you still love him?" and Blair only shrugs.
"I'm done with that," she says.
In Paris they hold hands walking from shop to shop and Serena tries drawing for fun, sketching the sharp lines of Blair's new hair and the wide curves of her eyelashes. They sit close at café tables with their ankles crossed over each other's, a tangle of heels locking together. They eat from the same plates and drink from the same cups, pink and red lipstick overlapping on the rims. They wear the same dresses in different colors. It's the closet they've been since they were twelve years old.
Serena finds a French boyfriend first and Blair shortly after, just because Serena did. They're bored within two weeks and leave the boys at a club to go get drunk together, Serena laughing, saying, "I don't know why I even bother," and Blair agreeing, "Who needs boys when I have you?"
Serena thinks it will be over before heels hit tarmac – Blair will have Chuck and Serena will have Nate, or Dan, or someone new, someone handsome she'll be tempted to give up everything for. Serena expects it so she begins pulling away before the plane has even pulled into the sky, tucking herself close to the tiny oval window with her arms wrapped around herself and no one else.
But Blair is not so easily deterred and it seems whatever she's decided about herself has stuck with the change in wardrobe. She slides her hand under Serena's arm and their fingers lock together, candy red polish and seashell white.
Something in Serena changes, or maybe just pretends to.
