I've always had a kind of passing interest in Boy George, mainly because I love New Wave so much, and I watched this movie mostly for Richard Madden. As it turns out, the whole movie was great - visually very pretty (it was directed by Julian Jarrold, who I love, and who also did the more recent Brideshead Revisited, which I loved), fairly good script, and extremely well cast. I would say, however, that the best part about it (aside from the acting) is the costumes and makeup - they're completely perfect, totally dead on. I've seen begun reading Boy George's memoir, Take It Like a Man, and really the costumes are incredibly accurate. I would also recommend his memoir for anyone who liked this movie, likes Boy George, likes New Wave, or loves fashion. It's really informative about the scene in early '80s England and very interesting.
Moral of the story: dudes in makeup are really pretty. Hope you enjoyed!

I've made some icons from the film here, in case anyone is interested.
Douglas Booth stars as George and is perhaps a bit too pretty. He's really very good though and captures George's mannerisms very well. He looks gorgeous, as per. Richard Madden plays Kirk Brandon, a punk singer and one of George's boyfriends, and he is a precious little marvelous thing like he usually is. I love how he looks in this film too, utterly different but great. I love the 1950s greaser thing they did with his clothes, plus the bleached hair. Freddie Fox is secondary but utterly adorable as Marilyn.
The movie, since it was for television and is, of course, not eighty hours long, had to condense/leave out some information. It cut the timeline down a lot, cutting out quite a lot of George's moving around, his early life, and his numerous, numerous boyfriends (seriously, there are like 80 ill-advised love affairs in the first hundred pages of that book). Philip Sallon is noticeably absent from the crew of characters, but perhaps he chose to be left out. It didn't focus so as much on the music as I would have liked. But overall a very good film and I recommend it. I could wax poetic about all the little details I loved, like the really great mirroring of scenes, the chemistry, the relationships between George and Kirk, George and Jon - and maybe I will some other time. For now just enjoy the pretty (and go watch it! it's on YouTube!).
