two lonely people
Don. Joan. Pre-series.
181 words.

Summary: He tried it once.

Note: Written for this prompt.

He tried it once.

When he was still the kind of guy who went out for drinks with the other copy boys and she was still the kind of girl who let strange men buy her drinks, Don put his hand on her thigh. He felt heavy brocade and her armor underneath, the taut line of her girdle feeding into her garter feeding into her stockings.

She leveled him with one look that said honey, you wouldn't know how to handle me. But her luminous red mouth parted and all she murmured in her girlish voice was, "How is your lovely new wife?"

Don wasn't used to women looking at him like that. He was used to the dance: eliciting a secretive smile, a facsimile of reluctance as lips tilted under his, the final triumphant gasp.

Don pulled his hand back as though scalded and found himself paying off Joan's brandy alexanders the rest of the night. He watched her go home with that new idiot they'd just hired, Paul or Saul or something.

He tried it once, and never again.
